Pure, authentic, lightfast pigments mixed with mastic resin and refined hydrocarbon solvents are the ingredients that go into this line of colours that has proven popular with restoration and conservation workers the world over. Restoration is a severe test, pitting half a century of Maimeri quality against the great masterworks of western art. This line makes use of a number of earths, which Maimeri still obtains from the best sources: authentic Sienna Earth, often replaced by imitations using artificial oxides in today's colours, various shades of Green Earths, authentic Umber Earths and Cassel Earths. Ocres, natural iron oxides, are still obtained by grinding the mineral; Maimeri does not use artificial precipitates prepared by industrial processes. Only the Lakes have been replaced by new products of organic synthesis, which maintain the same tone as the traditional pigment but with better lightfastness. Naples Yellow is lead antimoniate, as required by medieval recipes, and of course the mastic resin used is from the Island of Chios, whose name has always been linked with the best-known varnish resin.
